Federal Education Funding
Each year Congress budgets and appropriates funds for education. Currently, the federal school funding investment hovers around 8%, but most of that education funding is appropriated to elementary schools and post-secondary institutions. NASSP has consistently advocated for additional federal funding and support for middle-level and high schools, believing that the success of our secondary school students must be a national priority.
On February 17, 2009, federal policymakers enacted the American Revoery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1) to help states deal with the funding shortfalls and stimulate the economy. The bill invests an unprecedented $101 billion in education over two years.
On February 26, 2009, President Barack Obama submitted his education budget outline for FY2010 to Congress, which calls for an overall increase in federal education funding. A more detailed budget request is expected in late spring.
On March 11, 2009, the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 (H.R. 1105) was signed into law. The omnibus funds the federal government for the current, 2009, fiscal year and boosts overall federal education funding by 7.5%.
