NASSP supports comprehensive literacy to ensure that students graduate from high school with the oral language, reading, and writing skills necessary to be college and career ready. NASSP believes that successful schools are those that place an emphasis on literacy instruction and achievement.
Literacy instruction is often considered an issue for elementary schools. The literacy needs of middle and high school students frequently receive less attention and investment than other subjects. Additionally, a lack of state and local resources has forced many schools to eliminate middle and high school reading teachers and literacy coaches.
NASSP believes that a focused and sustained effort to invest resources in comprehensive literacy education at the local, state, and federal levels is needed to address this issue. The organization continually works with members of Congress to raise awareness on the importance of comprehensive literacy education from birth through grade 12, and the need to provide adequate resources through appropriate federal policy and funding to schools and school districts to address the literary needs of all students.
