“Teachers from each grade level mentor two students identified as economically disadvantaged. The idea is for the mentor teacher to:

  • Contact the students and their parents discretely
  • Communicate with the students weekly
  • Check on the students’ grades each grading period
  • Serve as a liaison between the students and the teachers of any classes where the students are struggling academically
  • Discover the students’ interests and encourage them to get involved in a club, sport, or other school activity

“During the school year, we have several days where students arrive three hours later than normal, allowing our mentor teachers time to meet and discuss their mentor students with the team to gain better understanding about struggles or positive experiences their mentor students are having.

“Our mentoring program has enabled our school of 2,800 students to become ‘smaller’ as it grows, and better meet the needs of our economically disadvantaged students.”
