Reston, VA – NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti issued the following statement on President-Elect Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education:

NASSP congratulates Betsy DeVos on her nomination as the next U.S. Secretary of Education. We look forward to working with her and the new administration toward our common goal of educating each child and helping them reach their full potential.

NASSP remains steadfast in its belief that universal public education provides an essential foundation for a democracy that aspires to involve all of its citizens. Where the secretary-designate’s policies aim to enhance public education and address areas of weakness, she will find in NASSP an ally and a partner. Misguided policies that weaken public education by diverting public funds from already-strained public schools or by enriching private companies at the expense of our neediest students, however, will continue to meet NASSP’s vigorous opposition. Once the nomination and approval process is completed, we look forward to sharing our concerns with Ms. DeVos directly and to constructing with her a powerful vision for public education as we move forward.
