Since 1941, NASSP has published the NASSP List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students. The approval cycle for each edition spans from September of a given year through the following August.
The purpose of this list—developed through NASSP’s National Committee on Student Contests, Programs, and Activities—is to assist principals, teachers, parents, and students in determining the legitimacy and educational value of a variety of external student program opportunities. The National Committee reviews all programs based on the following standards:
- Educational value
- Financial support
- Organizational structure
- Promotional accuracy
- Fair, appropriate adjudication
Any program that meets the list guidelines, as determined by the committee, will be included on the list. NASSP reserves the right to remove programs temporarily or permanently from the national list if programs fall below the standards for approval. Programs that do not appear on the national list are not necessarily without merit. Each school should determine the contests and activities in which it chooses to participate.
Students submit written works responding to a classical topic declared annually by CANE and publicized through the website (caneweb.org). Submissions are judged by state representatives and then by the president-elect of CANE to choose the overall winner. The winner receives their award at the annual meeting of CANE in March and reads the winning entry at the annual meeting banquet.
