Every year, I tell my students at Tift County High School in Tifton, GA, that not everyone is going to go to college, and that is OK. About 80% of my graduating seniors will enroll in some type of higher education, but not all of them will complete a degree program.

One of the most difficult tasks as a leader is guiding a school through a change that requires involvement from everyone, yet no one feels is their primary responsibility. In our experience, college and career access is one of these issues. While postsecondary preparation is embedded in many high schools’ mission statements, no one apart from school counselors has it listed in their official job description. Yet providing all students with the information and individualized support they need to find and pursue a postsecondary path is something that requires a full-school effort.

I was a first-generation college student. I was also a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent. In both my personal and professional lives, I’ve seen how inequitable access to academic resources and opportunities can create gaps for students.

It’s not exactly common to see students walking down the halls of a school carrying axes and chainsaws. But not every school has a forestry program like we do here at Waldport Middle and High School in Waldport, OR.
