About the School Culture Survey

The selected competencies align to the two domains of the Building Ranks framework: Building Culture and Leading Learning. There are 15 dimensions of which seven align to Building Culture and eight align to Leading Learning. Questions consist of 75 Likert-scale question items and two open-ended questions.

How long does the survey take?

It takes about 15–20 minutes to complete the survey.

Registration

How do I receive my seat to take the survey?

Create your account and log in using the link from the email invitation. Then, notify your Business Unit Administrator (BU Admin) that you are ready for your seat assignment. Your BU Admin will provide you a link to take the survey.

How is my demographic information used?

It is used in the aggregate for research purposes only; no individual demographic information is shared.

My name is spelled incorrectly. How do I correct this?

Misspellings can be corrected by the system administrator. Email the correction to [email protected].

Can I retake the survey?

Yes. The survey is a meaningful and manageable method of providing you feedback about your leadership strengths and opportunities for growth. Your BU Admin can reassign a seat so that you may take the survey again.

Who do I contact if I have technical difficulty?

For technical support, send an email to [email protected].

What happens if I lose internet connection while taking the survey?

The survey automatically saves your work every 10 seconds. If you lose internet connection, simply log back in and resume at the point you were interrupted.

What happens if I forget to log out or get interrupted when partway through the survey?

The survey will time out after 30 minutes of inactivity, after which you will need to log back in to complete the survey from the last save point. Note: Responses completed after timing out will not save.

Feedback

Why do I need to rate the culture?

Self-ratings are especially useful because they enable you to see your perspective relative to your supervisors, peers, and direct reports. Your rating in relation to your respondents provides an indication of known and unknown strengths and/or challenges in your school’s culture. If you receive higher or lower culture ratings than your self-ratings, these represent unknown strengths or development areas. However, if your self-ratings are in agreement with your respondents’ ratings, this indicates self-awareness.

How do my respondents take the Culture Survey?

As a participant, you determine who participates in the Culture Survey. You can copy and paste the link to a webpage or email the link to your respondents

Whom should I nominate as respondents for my feedback survey?

You should nominate respondents who work directly or indirectly with and have close personal experiences with your school. Respondents should include your supervisor, peer administrators, certified staff members (teachers, counselors, etc.), noncertified staff members (bus drivers, custodians, etc.), students (grades 3-12), parents, and community members. You will also complete the survey.

How many respondents should I nominate to complete the survey?

While there is no “right” number of respondents who should complete a Culture Survey, use the following when identifying how many respondents to include:

  • Fewer than 60 percent total respondents often may not provide a balanced perspective. You should target a 60-percent response rate from all respondent groups.
  • The anonymity of the feedback may be compromised when response rates are low, which reduces the value of the feedback and creates reluctance for respondents to participate.
  • Although lower response rates do not necessarily mean results are skewed or tell which direction they might be biased, they indicate that, as the participant, you should consider whose voices are—and are not—being heard.

The close date for submitting feedback is approaching or has expired, but not all of my respondents have submitted feedback. Can I request to have the data collection window extended or reopened?

The survey close date determines how long you and your respondents have to use the survey links. If your close date has expired, you will need to contact your BU Admin for an extension. If your close date has not expired and your BU Admin has granted you access to modify the date, you can extend the data collection period using the following steps:

Home » Rules

Select “Rules” and update the close date.

How will respondents be reminded to complete the survey?

As a registered user, reminders are automatically sent to you. Your respondents do not have to register to complete the survey. Therefore, once you identify your respondents, it is your responsibility to communicate with them outside the survey platform with reminders.

How is privacy protected?

NASSP is committed to protecting privacy, and we implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information. Your assessment rankings and responses will be anonymous. The report will only include average ratings by group per category—not by individual rating responses. Please note, open-ended responses will appear exactly as they are entered.

Who sees the PDF score report?

You and your BU Admin will see your scores.

What should I do if I cannot access my PDF score report?

Turn off your pop-up blocker in your web browser to enable PDF files to open.

When will results be available?

Score reports will be available after the survey closes. NASSP will notify you via email when they are available.

How do I get the results?

Return to the survey at https://buildingranks.nassp.org. Click the “View Score” button near the bottom-right side of the page.

How is the survey scored?

Each dimension is measured five times by various questions. Responses are scored on a four-point scale that shows the perception from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree.”

Is the survey reliable?

The Culture Survey was tested for reliability and validity. After psychometric review, the survey measures what it proposes consistently and accurately.
